Diamond fluorescence is a natural glow some diamonds emit under ultraviolet light, most often a soft blue. It appears on GIA and IGI certificates as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong. For most engagement ring buyers in the UK, fluorescence is not a flaw — and in some cases it can actually work in your favour, giving you a whiter-looking diamond at a lower price.

What is diamond fluorescence?
Diamond fluorescence is the visible light a diamond gives off when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light — such as sunlight, nightclub blacklights, or the UV lamp used in a laboratory. Roughly a third of all natural diamonds show some degree of fluorescence, and around 95% of fluorescent diamonds glow blue. Once you step out of UV light, the effect stops.
On a GIA grading report, fluorescence is graded on a five-point scale:
- None — no visible reaction to UV light
- Faint — a barely perceptible glow
- Medium — a noticeable but soft glow
- Strong — a clearly visible glow
- Very Strong — an intense, obvious glow
Fluorescence is not a grade of quality. It is simply a physical characteristic — like eye colour in people. It says nothing on its own about whether a diamond is beautiful.
Does diamond fluorescence matter?
For most diamonds, no — you will not see any difference with the naked eye in normal lighting. The GIA has publicly stated that for the vast majority of diamonds, fluorescence has no effect on appearance. But there are a few specific cases where it does matter, and knowing them protects you at the point of purchase.
When fluorescence helps you:
- In lower colour grades (I, J, K), medium to strong blue fluorescence can neutralise a faint yellow tint and make the diamond face up whiter.
- Fluorescent stones in these colour ranges typically sell at a discount, so you can get a visually whiter diamond for less money.
When fluorescence can be a problem:
- In very high colour grades (D, E, F), strong or very strong fluorescence can occasionally give the diamond a slightly milky, hazy, or oily appearance in direct sunlight. This affects a small minority of stones — not all of them — which is why the diamond must be viewed in person, not chosen from a report alone.
When it's neutral:
- Faint or medium fluorescence in the G–H colour range almost never has a visible effect. If you buy a diamond in this bracket, fluorescence is essentially a non-issue.
Why this matters for buyers
The reason fluorescence deserves attention is not that it's dangerous — it's that it's misunderstood. Many buyers see the word "Strong" on a certificate, panic, and dismiss what could be an excellent stone. Others pay a premium for "None" fluorescence when it makes no visible difference to the diamond they're actually choosing.
Understanding fluorescence lets you do three things:
- Read a certificate confidently rather than reacting to a single word.
- Stretch your budget by considering stones that are visually beautiful but priced lower because of the fluorescence label.
- Avoid the small number of stones where fluorescence really does affect appearance.

When we help a client build a bespoke engagement ring, fluorescence becomes a tool rather than a warning label:
- If the client wants maximum value, we may deliberately choose a stone with medium or strong blue fluorescence in the I–J colour range, because it can face up as white as an F or G at a significantly lower price.
- If the client wants a top-colour diamond (D–F), we prefer None or Faint fluorescence, and we always confirm visually that the stone is crisp in sunlight.
- We never let a fluorescence grade rule a stone in or out on paper alone.
This is one of the practical advantages of a bespoke process over buying from an online-only list of ring stock.
What to consider before buying a fluorescent diamond
Before you commit to a diamond with any fluorescence grade above Faint, work through these checks:
- Colour grade of the stone. Fluorescence matters most in the very high (D–F) and lower (I–K) colour grades — for opposite reasons.
- Visual inspection in daylight. Ask to see the diamond in natural light, not only under jewellery-shop spotlights. Fluorescence effects appear under sunlight, not tungsten.
- The certificate itself. GIA and IGI both note fluorescence intensity. Prefer diamonds with a reputable laboratory report so the grading is trustworthy.
- Price context. If a fluorescent stone is priced lower than a similar non-fluorescent one, ask why. A well-chosen fluorescent diamond can be excellent value; a poorly chosen one can look hazy.
- The setting. A halo, bezel, or heavier metalwork can slightly influence how a diamond's face-up colour reads, which affects whether fluorescence is beneficial or neutral in the finished ring.
If you are not able to inspect the stone yourself, work with a jeweller who will do it on your behalf and describe honestly what they see.
Fluorescence and resale value
Historically, strongly fluorescent diamonds have traded at a discount on the wholesale market, particularly in the D–F colour range. That discount reflects buyer preference rather than any objective flaw. For an engagement ring you plan to keep and wear for life, resale considerations are secondary — what matters is how the diamond looks on the hand. But it is worth knowing that a "Strong Blue" diamond and a "None" diamond of otherwise identical specification are not priced the same on the market, and that gap is real.

Is diamond fluorescence bad? No. For most diamonds, fluorescence has no visible effect. It only becomes a concern in a small number of high-colour (D–F) stones with strong or very strong fluorescence that appear hazy in sunlight — and that has to be judged by eye, not by certificate.
Does fluorescence make a diamond less valuable? It can affect price. Should I avoid diamonds with strong blue fluorescence? Not automatically. In the I–K colour range, strong blue fluorescence can improve how the diamond faces up. In the D–F range, it depends on the specific stone. Always view the diamond in daylight before deciding.
Do lab-grown diamonds have fluorescence? Some do, though fluorescence is more common and more varied in natural diamonds. Grading reports for lab-grown stones from IGI and GIA will note fluorescence in the same way.
How is fluorescence graded? By exposing the diamond to long-wave UV light in a laboratory and comparing its reaction against master stones. The result is recorded on the certificate as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong.

Fluorescence is a genuine property of a diamond, not a defect. Handled well, it can give you a whiter-looking stone at a lower price.
